Loud vs. Soft: Same Space - Different Impact

Loud vs. Soft: Same space - different impact

Many singers sing softs as smaller sounds. They do less: less space, less air, less diction. Soft singing is not small singing or weak singing. Soft singing must be as big if not bigger than loud singing.

Singing requires intensity. Volume is a form of intensity. When volume is removed, it must be replaced with other forms of intensity, such as breath, tone color, and diction. When painting, a softer shade of red is not achieved by using less red paint, but rather by mixing in white and/or other colors.

What can you ADD to make your softs MORE to replace the missing volume?
